Supreme Court overturns law banning depictions of animal cruelty
ABC News    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Supreme Court invalidated a federal law that had criminalized the sale of certain depictions of animal cruelty, including hunting videos. An 8-1 majority on the Court said that the law was "substantially overbroad, and therefore invalid under the First Amendment," affirming the right of free speech in the face of some government-imposed restrictions. Feral hogs destroying North Texas crops
Amarillo.com    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Floyd County farmer Don Marble is frustrated. For years, feral hogs have destroyed his crops and proved ruinous to his land. Like other farmers and landowners, Marble has tried just about everything to control the feral hog population on his property. This includes putting fences around his ranch, shooting the animals from helicopters and allowing hunters to kill as many as they can. But the methods have had little success. More

Spring turkey season: The beauty of the hunt
The Houston Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Dawn's chorus of gobbles from the fog-wrapped elms and oaks and hackberries along the creek abruptly ceased as soon as the turkeys flew down from their roosts. For more than an hour, Shannon Tompkins tried to coax a conversation with the birds, starting with modest purrs and clucks, then, every 10 minutes or so, incrementally upping the volume and urgency with yelps and cuts. Take care in the kitchen to make gobbler gobbleable
The Great Falls Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When a variety of wild turkey hunters at Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks were asked about preparing and handling wild turkey meat, there was unanimous agreement on a few important points. "Wild turkey is sensitive to over-cooking, as is most game meat," said Dwayne Andrews, of FWP's Miles City, Mont., office. "Expect excellent white meat on the breasts, with dark meat on the legs that can be tough and must be cooked differently from the breast fillets." More

Black magic
Bowhunter    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Melanistic (black) deer are even rarer than albino deer. Even more rare are 10-point, 4 1/2-year old melanistic bucks - exactly what Virginia bowhunter Mike Kaczor bagged this year in Iowa. No official records are kept on melanistic deer, but Kaczor's buck is most likely the largest black whitetail ever killed by a bowhunter. More

More states join fight with feds over guns
The Associated Press via Businessweek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A growing list of states joining the legal battle over federal gun control argue that Congress can't regulate guns made and sold within a state. The argument over gun control, sparked with the "firearm freedoms act" first enacted in Montana and subsequently in other states, is leading to a constitutional showdown over the reach of Congress into state borders. Whitetail deer thrive in farmland, forests
The Rankin Ledger    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
article
Whitetail deer are so plentiful these days in most parts of the country, it's surprising to some people that they were decimated to the point of near-extinction by unrestricted hunting at the turn of the century. Whitetails are found all over the North American continent, with populations in the millions. They survive in the big woods of northern Maine to the deep saw grass and hammock swamps of Florida. They thrive in mixed farmlands, brushy areas and timber, and can survive the desolate cactus and thorn brushdeserts of southern Texas and Mexico. More
