TPWD wants more research before issuing mule deer program permits
Lone Star Outdoor News
Share

Trapping wild mule deer and mating them with prime breeder stock was approved this year by the Texas Legislature, but some landowners are frustrated they can't do that sooner than they had hoped. Senate Bill 460, signed into law last summer, extends the successful "deer management permit" program for white-tailed deer to mule deer.

George Hinton finds a new passion, business in South African safari
The Express-Times
Share

Four years ago, George Hinton stood on the plains of South Africa looking down the barrel of his rifle at a kudu, an antelope with massive, winding horns. Hinton had been a hunter for 38 years, but he'd never come across a creature quite like it. The kudu is now a shoulder mount on the wall behind the counter of The Cozy Barn, his family-run stove and fireplace store on in Wind Gap, Pa.

Hunters asked to donate extra game
KYTV-TV

Hunting season began recently, but bagging that prize buck isn't the only thing on hunters' minds. They are also trying to put food on the table for other families. CBS 19's Amanda Roberson explains how East Texas hunters are helping through a state program called "Hunters For the Hungry". One in five Texas households found themselves at risk of hunger last year. "Hunters For the Hungry" aims at lowering that number by allowing hunters to donate their venison to those in need. With a strong number of hunters right here in East Texas, surprisingly, the state said only one meat business in East Texas is donating to the program.

Deer hunting could open 2012 in 4 urbanized Texas counties
Lone Star Outdoor News
Share

Deer hunting, with archery only, might be opened next year in three northeast Texas counties and one along the coast, if the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission approves. Hunting regulations similar to archery-only Grayson County would be extended to Collin, Dallas and Rockwall counties, according to the proposal. And in Galveston County, the deer hunting regulations would mirror those of neighboring Harris County. All four counties currently have no open deer seasons.

Big bucks bring big bucks

Every year, hunting pumps $859 million into the Ohio economy. According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the state ranks eighth nationally in hunting-related sales through equipment, fuel, lodging, food, transportation, processing and taxidermy. It's also 10th in the number of hunting-related jobs. At the heart of it all is Licking County with its white-tail deer archery and gun seasons. The county annually leads Ohio in bowhunting kills and is among the leaders during the nine-day deer gun season, which runs Nov. 28-Dec. 4 and Dec. 17-18.

Texas asks hunters for help in the drought
StateImpact-Texas
Share

The worst single-year drought in Texas history has left deer undernourished and, in some cases, dying in greater numbers than before. Many of the deer hunters are bringing home are skinnier than normal and the population of fawns surviving through the summer took a nosedive in many parts of the state. At McBrides Gun's in Austin, Thomas Hunt is looking for the perfect rifle to take his son Mathew out hunting. The appropriately-named Hunt has already bagged two deer this year. He says the impact of the drought was noticeable right away.

Quail hunting tradition alive at Hidden Lakes Resort in Texas
North Texas e-News
Share

Molly, a little two-year-old pointer who shares the bloodline with a pedigree of champions a mile long, was running with her head high, just downwind of an overgrown briar patch. Luke Clayton and a group of first timers were hunting quail at Hidden Lakes Hunting Resort near Yantis, Texas. When the faint, tantalizing scent of quail touched her nostrils she froze in mid stride, locked up in a solid point that left little doubt that she was on birds. A few quick steps toward the cover indicated the birds were running. Then Molly froze again.

Johnathan O'Dell is the small game biologist for the Arizona Game and Fish Department. He's also a seriously dedicated squirrel hunter. O'Dell says he prefers hunting the bushy-tailed tree-dwellers over any other game because of the skill level required. In 2009 he happened to be traveling to destinations within the ranges of all eight tree squirrel species native to the United States.

3 ways to weatherproof your rifle
OutdoorLife

If you've ever hunted in the rain, or even just cold temperatures, you know the toll adverse weather can take on your rifle. In a few weeks Tyler Freel (author) is headed down to Afognak Island, Ala., to hunt deer and although it's a hunter's paradise, the conditions can't get much worse for a rifle. Between the constant humidity, rain and salt water, even an "all weather" rifle will rust in no time at all.

Triple sixes: Do-it-yourself Colorado hunt
BigGameHunt
Share

New York State residents, Dan and Janet Wescott, had been hunting together almost as long as they had been married. They had been on both guided hunts and do-it-yourself hunts and the results from the guided hunts were impressive and are mounted in their living room. The do-it-yourself hunts on public land turned out to be unimpressive and more times than not they returned home tired and empty handed. It wasn't from a lack of hunting skill. The problem was hunter density, which turned out to be higher than animal density.
